Second Language Working Memory Deficits and Plasticity in Hearing Bimodal Learners of Sign Language

چکیده
Litt le is known about the acquisition of another language modality on second language (L2) working memory (WM) capacity. Diff erential indexing within the WM system based on language modality may explain diff erences in performance on WM tasks in sign and spoken language. We investigated the eff ect of language modality (sign versus spoken) on L2 WM capacity. Results indicated reduced L2 WM span relative to fi rst language span for both L2 learners of Spanish and American Sign Language (ASL). Importantly, ASL learners had lower L2 WM spans than Spanish learners. Additionally, ASL learners increased their L2 WM spans as a function of profi ciency, whereas Spanish learners did not. Th is patt ern of results demonstrated that acquiring another language modality disadvantages ASL learners. We posited that this disadvantage arises out of an inability to correctly and effi ciently allocate linguistic information to the visuospatial sketchpad due to L1-related indexing bias.

The relationship between working memory and L2 reading comprehension
Since an important role for working memory has been found in the first language acquisition (e.g., Daneman, 1991; Daneman & Green, 1986; Waters & Caplan, 1996), research on the role of working memory is emerging as an area of concern for second language acquisition (e.g., Atkins & Baddeley, 1998; Miyake & Freidman, 1998; Robinson, 1995, 2002, ...
متن کاملThe Effect of Bilingualism/ Monolinguals on L2 Working Memory Capacity and Verbal Intelligence
Issues related to bilingualism and the effects which might have on language learners’ cognitive and meta-cognitive variables have attracted the attention of a couple of researchers in the field of Second Language Acquisition (SLA).Since a couple of decades ago, there has been a plethora of studies on cognitive and metacognitive differences between bilinguals and monolinguals. However, the impac...
متن کاملThe Development of Reading and Operation Span Tasks in Persian as Measures of Working Memory Capacity for Iranian EFL Learners
This paper presented two complex span tasks in Persian as measures of working memory capacity (WMC). Firstly, the construct of working memory (WM) and possible WM measures that could assess this construct efficiently were critically reviewed. Accordingly, as measures of domain-general components of WM, a reading span task and an operation span task which were documented to assess this construct...
متن کاملSpoken Language Activation Alters Subsequent Sign Language Activation in L2 Learners of American Sign Language.
A large body of literature has characterized unimodal monolingual and bilingual lexicons and how neighborhood density affects lexical access; however there have been relatively fewer studies that generalize these findings to bimodal (M2) second language (L2) learners of sign languages. The goal of the current study was to investigate parallel language activation in M2L2 learners of sign languag...
متن کاملOnline Processing of English Wh-Dependencies by Iranian EFL Learners
To be able to reach the level of ultimate attainment in the second language, learners need to acquire not only the grammar of the L2 but also the language processing mechanisms involved in the comprehension of sentences in real time. Contrary to its importance, very little is known yet about online L2 processing. This study examines whether advanced Iranian learners of English reactivate disloc...
